Creative Design in Woodworking with Doug Pisik
at November 12th Guild Meeting
Doug Pisik is an Atlanta-based artist who specializes in wood. He creates sculpture, turnings, abstract wall art and boxes with complex designs, for which he is primarily known.
Most of his work is composed of unique geometric patterns generated out of highly contrasting woods fashioned together with a technique he perfected and calls “Through-Pattern Construction.” This technique allows the complex patterns to pass from the outside through to the inside of his boxes and art panels, ensuring every facet is finely decorated.
Doug primarily avoids dyes and stains and instead continuously searches for woods with naturally contrasting colors and tones to accent his work. Some of his pieces are constructed with over a dozen species of wood and are composed of over a thousand pieces, which appear to be seamlessly joined together into a solid composition. He often finishes his pieces in natural oils and waxes so the original feel of the wood is not lost, but is instead accentuated.
He has received awards in a number of juried exhibits of national artists, been part of a dozen museum exhibitions, and accepted large commissions including several from Home Depot and the Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre. He is classified as a “Master Woodworker” from the Woodworker’s Guild of Georgia.

Fall Mini-Symposium on Cabinet Making
with Paul Fussell held October 13th
The Woodworkers Guild of Georgia held its annual Fall Mini-Symposium at Suwanee Lumber on Saturday, October 13th, with 24 members in attendance. Paul Fussell, a former Guild President, professional woodworker, and woodworking teacher, discussed and illustrated the various techniques and choices for sturdy, functional cabinets.
Paul showed us how to construct a base cabinet with a drawer and two kinds of doors, with and without face frames. He discussed the pros and cons of some of the construction details and methods. For instance, he likes the use of pocket hole joinery due to its strength, accuracy, and simplicity. He also recommended using cabinet grade plywood for the carcasses.

Guild Charity Toy Building Concluded October 8th
Approximately twenty-five Guild members met at Woodcraft on Monday, October 8th to finish
assembly / glue-up of the toy trucks for Scottish Rite Children's Hospital. The completion of the wooden children's puzzles, the other component of this Charity, took place on September 13th.

More Fun Than Woodworking?
Now what could be more fun than cutting a board too short, planing a piece too thin, cutting a tenon too loose, or burning an edge with a router?
The answer of course: the WWG Holiday Party! You just cannot screw it up. For ten bucks per member you get to bring a guest, have a great dinner, enter one of your self-made treasures in the show-and-tell contest, vote for colleagues’ entries, maybe win a ribbon and a cash prize, but best of all, you and your guest spend time with old friends and new acquaintances.
I met my wife Ilene about the same time I joined the Guild, about six years ago. At that time, I only knew a few members, but thanks to the party environment and Ilene’s outgoingpersonality, we soon had many new friends. In fact, some our current closest friends are couples we met through Guild Holiday Parties.
In addition to individual members, our sponsor members are also invited. Last year, two employees from Rockler attended, and this year we hope other sponsor members will attend. This is just another opportunity to get to know the suppliers we depend on to keep our production lines humming, so we can continue to cut boards too short, etc.
So, sign up on our website, mark your calendars for December 10, plan to treat your guest to a nice dinner and some great camaraderie, get your show-and-tell project finished, and join us to have a fun evening.

Garvan Lowboy And Understanding the Carvings

The 2018 Peach State Chapter fall program will feature Tony Kubalak on the Garvan lowboy/dressing table. The two day weekend presentation will be on Saturday and Sunday, November 10-11 from
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (both days) at Woodcraft at 1085 Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell, Georgia.
An optional one day intensive workshop will be on Monday, Nov. 12th. Tony has been to Peach State SAPFM before when he did a presentation on the Newport tea table. Tony is an accomplished maker, writer and presenter. This year he will focus on the lowboy attributed to the “Garvan carver” which is currently in the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA). Tony has written two books on carving: “Carving 18th Century Furniture Elements” and “Carving 18th Century Furniture Motifs”. You can learn more about Tony at www.tonykubalak.com.
The focus of the program can be summed up as “What information can you derive from photographs that help explain the carving, and how do you translate that into the actual carving”. We can think of no finer example to work on than this outstanding lowboy.
Saturday and Sunday: The program will be a combination of presentation, slides, demonstrations and questions and answers. The session will begin with a slide presentation showing construction sequence for the entire piece. Tony will discuss and demonstrate how to “read” photographs of carvings and looking at “layers” of the carving.
Tony will use some of the elements of this lowboy as case studies for the process of reading the carving details. Elements that he will examine include: Front and/or side rail carvings, central drawer, knee and quarter column. In each example he will describe what he sees in the photos and how to implement it in wood. Tony will then demonstrate the specific process he uses to transferring a carving from a photograph onto a knee of a leg. Other demonstrations include feathering on skirt molding, and the layout and treatment of the edge molding on top.
All demonstrations will start with a slide presentation showing the process from beginning to end. Tony will have a roughed-out sample that he can then demonstrate the detail carving. Elements that will be included in the demonstrations include: Central drawer shell; Central drawer applied vine; Front and/or side rails; Knee; Quarter column; Top molded edge. Fee for the two day weekend presentation is $120.
Monday Intensive Study of Carving
The Monday session will be a continuation of the the weekend carving study with a more personal interaction with Tony on varying specifics of his techniques and observations on developing a plan for reproducing complex carvings from photographs.
