Advancing the art and understanding of fine woodworking!
One of the things I love most about woodworking is that you always learn
more as you work with wood. This usually occurs right after you make a
stupid error. Sometimes, however, you can actually attempt to learn
something and find some degree of success.
When I was ‘volunteered’ to coordinate the January program on chisel sharpening I did not expect to learn anything, but I was wrong. We all use chisels a lot and they are not just for opening paint cans... On January 8, three of us will show you how to sharpen a chisel easily so that you can shave the hair from the back of your hand! If it will do that, it will work well on wood too.
You can sharpen a chisel by rubbing it on rocks (special
rocks).
It helps if you hold it at the proper angle. It also helps if you rub the back. You
should pay attention to the size of the grit (measured in microns) that your
chosen rocks are made of. Sometimes if you rub rocks on glass first, you
can make frosted glass to hold even smaller bits of grit to polish the back
of your chisel. Some people even put rocks on paper to sharpen chisels.
If all of this sounds purposely obscure, you need to come to the January 8th
meeting to become an even better chiseler (and chisel sharpener) than you are. We will even have a bucket of chisels available so that you can practice sharpening.
Woodcraft will also have some demonstrations of "rock rubbing".

What Do You Want to Learn About ?
Also at the January meeting, we will conduct an annual survey to obtain your input on the programs you would like us to plan for 2018. Last year, Kevin May did an excellent job preparing lists of topics for your selection. This input was particularly valuable to the Programs Committee in selecting and developing the programs that were presented in 2017. Because feedback from the membership on these programs was so positive, the Programs Committee worked again with Kevin to develop a new list of topics.

At the January meeting, each person will get 10 dots to place next to program topics on large charts that he/she would like the committee, under Ken Gregg’s leadership, to consider for 2018. This is your chance to express the interests that would improve your woodworking knowledge and skills. We hope you will attend the meeting and participate in this exercise.

The Annual Guild Holiday Party was enjoyed by around 65 members and guests.
The opportunity to socialize, enjoy a great dinner provided by Epicurean Endeavors, and partake in choosing your favorites among the numerous entries in the Craftsman and Masters categories, resulted in a great evening.
The many wonderful projects on display made voting difficult.

Well-known Woodworker and teacher Rollie Johnson headlines the Guild Annual Spring Symposium to be held on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Repair and tuning and diagnosing problems in planes
Member will bring in their problem planes and Tod will repair and or tune 3 or 4 into workable condition
Crown moldings with hollows and rounds planes:
Demonstrate how to size and design crown moldings in different sizes utilizing paper and compass and then demonstrate how to execute the moldings with hollows and rounds planes.
Sunday - March 11
Demonstration on how to design and make side escapement planes
1. Stock Dimensions
2. Type of wood
3. Layout and design principles
4. Excavate mouth and mortise cavity.
5. Plane floats to tune and true the mortise
6. Shape plane sole
7. Plane irons cut and rough grind
8. Heat treat and temper irons
9. Final grind and honing the edge
10. Tune the wedge and shavings flow
11. Detail the plane body.
Optional Workshop: Monday and Tuesday - March 12 & 13
Class will include instruction and materials
The 2 day Workshop will allow students to make one plane. Students with prior experience should be able to make two planes and improve their skill and retention. IE: matched pair of hollow and rounds can be made.

Tod Herrli was raised in Northern Indiana on a small dairy farm and always had an interest in woodworking. He started working with power tools in 1980’s and in the 1990’s transitioned to hand tools after reading Michael Dunbar's books , watching Underhill’s Wood Wright Shop, and attending classes with Gene Landon at Olde Mill Cabinet Shoppe. He also took a plane making class with Mario Rodriquez. Since working with Landon and Rodriquez, he studied written material and different planes to manufacture his own planes. Tod would often copy and supply planes for Gene Landon’s classes at Olde Mill so students could copy Landon’s furniture projects.
In the mid 1990’s Tod started teaching plane making classes out of his home and the local Woodcraft store. Some of Tod’s students include notables like Larry Williams of Clark and Williams’s planes and Daniel Schwank of Red Rose Reproductions. He has also demonstrated to several SAPFM chapters in the East and Midwest, such as the Virginia, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana chapters.
He has also produced two DVDs that demonstrate plane making: Classic plane making and Ogee planes through Popular Woodworking.
