Measuring at February Meeting

Tom Melcher
will conclude his excellent presentation on Measuring and Marking, which began with Measuring
at the February Meeting.
He will discuss the tools and techniques for Marking
at the March 12th Guild Meeting, including pencils, marking knives, knife and wheel-style marking gauges, center finders, offset tools, punches and awls, compasses and trammel points, etc.
Methods, and tips & tricks on their usage will be included, as well as buying advice.
Tom's Measuring presentation at the Guild's February Meeting highlighted

He many measuring tricks and details, such as sectoring - or dividing a board into equal parts with dividers - as well as finding the center of a cathedral. The importance of referential measuring and proportioning included the classic Golden Ratio, which calculates the ideal width by dividing the desired length by 1.618. For example: 15" long divided by 1.618 equals 9.27" (about 9 9/32 ").
Imperial VS. the metric system (it is simpler) is an individual choice, but the occasional need for conversions can be required on a spec sheet.
Remember that 1 inch equals 25 mm.

Spring is a very busy time for Woodworkers Guild members. We have the usual Guild meetings, plus the Woodworking Show (March 16-18) and our Spring Symposium (April 21-22).
The Woodworking Show will again be at the Cobb Galleria. This show presents several opportunities for us:
• A chance to show off our talents to the local woodworking community through the judged contest we hold and our Show 'N Tell tables
• Recruit new members through our interaction with show attendees
• Engaging fellow woodworkers though demonstrations and preparation of charitable projects
• Taking advantage of the many excellent presentations
• Shopping for bargains at the many vendor booths
However, getting members to bring projects for the contest has been a challenge in the past, and it looks to be again. I’m fortunate in that I typically have a few toys “in stock” that I bring. You may recall the Woody Wagon that I entered at the Holiday party contest. Well, that is still waiting for a “worthy kid” to receive it. So, I encourage you to look around the house and identify a few wooden treasures you can bring to the booth for contest entry or just display. John Champion has published instructions of how to submit your entries. See article below.
It’s a bit early to be talking about the spring symposium, so I’ll not dwell on it yet, but I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve attended Rollie Johnson’s presentations at past Woodworking Shows and taken away many insights. We are fortunate that he responded positively to Jim Milam’s invitation!

headlines the Guild Annual Spring Symposium to be held on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Woodcraft in Roswell.

You can register with paypal on the website, or mail a check for the $85.00 fee.
Please note that this event is limited to 70 attendees due to fire marshal requirements at Woodcraft. Therefore, registration will be "first-come first-serve".

REMINDER
Tod Herrli will demonstrate the repair and tuning of problem planes and the use of hollows and rounds in creating crown moldings on Saturday. On Sunday, Tod will demonstrate the design and construction of side escapement planes, including the construction of the wooden plane bodies and the fabrication, heat treatment and honing of plane irons. The fee for the weekend program is $70.00 for SAPFM members who register and pay in advance and $80.00 for walk-up registration and non-members.
During the optional workshop on Monday and Tuesday, participants may make one or two side escapement planes, depending on the planes selected and the skill of the participant. Plane choices include hollows, rounds, ogee, thumbnail and ovolo. The fee for the workshop alone is $120.00 which includes materials. Attendance at the workshop is limited due to workbench space. Advance registration and payment is required to secure your space at the workshop.
During the lunch period on Saturday we will have our customary "show and tell". Please bring your latest projects or thumb-drives for larger projects. Jay Stallman plans to bring his highly decorated Federal Period desk and bookcase which was featured in the last issue of Pins and Tails. Woodcraft has graciously allowed us to conduct a tool swap Saturday noon in the back room. Members may bring old tools they desire to sell or swap. Gary Demanche is selling many of his wooden planes including a half set of hollows and rounds and a number of specialized planes by recognized toolmakers. Please do not bring tools that compete with tools sold by Woodcraft.
Turners' Group
The "3rd Monday" Turners' Group will meet on March 19th at Rockler's Kennesaw location, located at 425 Barrett Pkwy.
