Joining and Gluing Boards on Edge
at the June 11th Guild Meeting

The June Guild meeting at Woodcraft will be a discussion of how to flatten board edges and glue them together to make wider boards. Whether you are making a raised panel, chair seat or
table top, mastering this technique is important. The easiest way to flatten an edge is with a jointer. We will show you how to make sure your jointer is working correctly and how to use it to make a square, flat edge prior to gluing. If you don’t have a jointer and don’t want to trust yourself to hand plane the edge, there are other ways to proceed. A table saw can be used with different types of sleds that you can make. The sled holds the board as you rip off the irregular edge. It is to move along the saw fence, or it can have a strip of wood on the bottom so that it rides in the miter groove on your saw table. A router may also be used to square and flatten an edge. A straight piece of plywood or mdf is needed to make a platform for your router. Several types will be shown.
After this discussion, several members will demonstrate how to glue and clamp the two boards. Jim Milam will show you how to glue up newly planed edges (using a hand plane) with and without clamps. He will also demonstrate how to use a hand plane to make what is called a spring joint. John Jones will demonstrate the use of dowels and biscuits to help align the boards before gluing and clamping. Tom Melcher will play with Festool's Domino that he likes to use in this process. Finally, Ken Gregg will demonstrate how to glue the edges of thin boards, using stretch tape as clamps.

Guild Members Day Held at Peach State Lumber in May
Members Day
was held on Saturday morning, May 19th at Peach State Lumber
in Kennesaw.
Approximately 35 members were in attendance and enjoyed coffee and donuts as well as many discussions and experiences with their practice of woodworking. Highlighting the event was a 13 question quiz from Fine Woodworking presented by Tom Melcher. The quiz was a challenge, with Milton Miller the winner with 8 correct answers. Milton won 100 bf of Hackberry wood, and Art Sanders and Steve Sheppard won the second and third prizes and split 100 bf of Eastern Yellow Pine. All prizes were courtesy of Peach State Lumber! Peach State also offered excellent specials and pricing on all their lumber for us that day.

Guild Library News
Things are happening in the Guild library. The library rules were recently amended by the
board as of May 14, 2026 to address the situations of a DVD not being timely returned by a
borrower or being damaged while checked out by a borrower. Item 4 of the amended rules is
the new language. The language in Item 4 comes from the Guild library policy which is now in
draft form and soon to be approved by the board. When approved, both library policy and rules
on the point will be consistent.

Members should remember that library rules are merely the framework for operation of the library. The real success of the library rests on borrower responsibility and cooperation.
To date, that has been great!
Another library change is the list of DVDs, now totaling 230, being posted on the website. The DVDs are grouped in 23 categories which are listed alphabetically on a spreadsheet and keyed to location in the collection.

Soon it will be placed on the website, to be preceded by the library rules in effect as they exist
now. The list on the website at the moment is slightly out of date, as it does not include the
additions described below.
Finally, several new DVDs have been purchased or donated to the library this year. The
donations were from Wayne Wills, a former Guild member, and Gary Fader, our president, as
noted below.

Definition: Mentor - An experienced and trusted advisor.
Recall the mission of the Guild: “To educate our members and the public through the promotion and development of the highest standards in every aspect of woodworking.”
Isn’t it interesting how much these statements overlap? Yet what is our combined approach to achieving our mission and the role of mentoring? I submit that our current role is minimal.
Have you ever been mentored by someone in the Guild? Have you ever been a mentor to someone in the Guild? We do have a few members who I would claim as mentors because I’m aware of them inviting other members to their shops to teach a particular skill, such as hand-cutting dovetails, making boxes, or stringing. But then, look at the projects brought in for show-and-tell or those that show up at the holiday party and Woodworking Show. There is some major talent among us!
So, how can we best share some of this great expertise? Clearly, we share some of it at our meeting presentations, but that doesn’t involve hands-on practice or getting immediate feedback. When you see a project in a magazine that piques your interest, who can you turn to for advice (mentoring) to make it?
What if we had a list of members, who would be willing mentors, and knowledge of their associated expertise, be it a skill or type of project? Maybe someone has a unique tool that takes some expertise to use properly. The list could include the mentor’s town of residence for access considerations?
Personally, I’ve had three mentoring sessions that involved spending time in some member’s shop, one on using a skew on the lathe, one on setting up and sharpening a hand plane, and one on stringing. What’s satisfying is how these mentors have shared the tricks they’ve learned and how to accomplish the objectives inexpensively.
So, here’s what was discussed at the last Board meeting: Let’s prepare a list of volunteer mentors, areas of expertise, and town of residence. Then we can distribute the list and put it on the website. Obviously, the success of this effort depends on having members volunteer and other members take advantage of the offers. So here’s my entry: As many of you know, I love making bandsaw boxes, jewelry boxes, toys (like pull-along wooden dogs, trains, and airplanes), and all-wooden clocks. I live in East Cobb and two people can almost turn around in my shop.
So come visit me. In the meantime, Nuane Neely is going to ask you to sign up on a mentor list, by E-mail and sign-up sheet at our meetings. I hope you will volunteer and be a promoter of our mission. And then, I hope you will take advantage of being mentored to develop a particular skill or produce a new project.

Website & Social Media Strategy
Do you have experience in creating a website or a social media presence?
Do you lack experience, but still have an interest?
We are initiating a review of the Guild's website offering: the platform, tools, content management and channels of access. Additionally, we are working to develop a social media presence (FaceBook, Instagram, etc.)
A core team has been formed that will be led by John Champion and also includes John Jones, Tom Risoli, Steven Sheppard, and Tom Melcher. If we have one or two more individuals who have an interest, we can expand our team. If we have more, we will gladly engage you in some of the research that will be needed.
Our plan is to assess our current offering and also look at what other similar organizations are doing.
We will also be surveying our membership to understand what they feel is important to have in our website.
