Interesting statistics (from Forrester Research) on what small businesses with less than 20 employees are spending their marketing dollars on during 2009.
Our services in each area are bolded in parentheses.
- 87% use web sites. (TlehsBest and Tlehs Online)
- 81% use email. (Tlehs recommends using Constant Contact)
- 57% use search marketing. (TlehsBest is crawled and listings show up in search results)
- 48% use direct mail. (Tlehs Solo)
- 47% use blogs. (TlehsBest, Typepad, or Wordpress)
- 43% use trade shows. (Chambers, trade or group associations)
- 43% use inside sales/telemarketing. (Internally from your business)
- 37% use executive events. (Chamber events and company sponsored events)
- 31% use print advertising. (Tlehs Directory, Tlehs Newsletter, TlehsBest Magazine-Coming soon)
The ones at the top of the list are very popular because their cost can be low, but managing them requires significant time on your part. The ones nearer the bottom are more expensive, but are easier to accomplish in many cases, especially print advertising.
So if you have time and not much of a budget, use the services listed near the top. If you are busy or near capacity and have a marketing budget to spend, the services closer to the bottom may be the best choice. We think the best choice is always a combination of them.
